Here are examples of the type
of questions that are often raised :
“Why did my business
fail? I had state-of-the-art technology at my fingertips!”
“How am I ever going to compete for business against all
those other companies?”
“I haven’t even launched my product and somebody else
has already copied the technology and is marketing it already!
What happened?”
“I’ve invested all my money into the technology…
isn’t that enough? The product will sell itself, won’t
it?”
One of the key principles that CEI will often remind
clients is that technology isn’t everything –
even if it’s cutting-edge, even if it’s similar to another
wildly popular item currently on the market, even if it’s
been predicted to succeed by analysts and reviewers.
Is the product clearly identified and packaged? Are
customer demographics available and properly matched to the product?
Who is going to advertise it? Who is going to sell it? What about
your competitors – do you know if they have a similar product
(probably, so what makes yours better)? Does market-trend research
support the timing of the launch of your product? There are so many
factors that contribute to the success of a product, and none of
them having to do with how good the technology itself is.
It takes significant effort to properly research
inside and outside of the business, to do careful market analysis,
and develop relevant recommendations on marketing and distribution.
It would be great for a business owner to do the job him or herself;
however, in many cases they need our help because:
Our consultants have the right expertise and
knowledge;
Our arms length relationship with your organization
enables us to gain a more objective overview of the business;
and
We can learn things from your employees, customers,
and supply chain partners that they may not share with you,
especially when their opinions differ from yours.
We are not a professional sales company, but we know how important
the sales function is and therefore emphasize it in our consultations.
In Canada and the United States, we have experience developing distribution
channels. If you want to move your products quickly to the end customers,
we can help you set up in-house sales people, or help you take advantage
of sales consultants who can sell your products. Our job is to find
these people and build a workable distribution system for you.
Think about it: You need to broaden your customer
base. Your sales volume is below your expectation. You need to invest
in marketing, sales and advertising. It is too expensive, right?
Well, there are alternatives. But if you have an inadequate or poorly
focused sales strategy this goal may seem impossible. Our role is
to help you find the thousands of people in the global market who
are interested in your product.
